I am not historically in toon with Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. Tho I do have a book I've had a while, which gives a detailed account of the Gun Powder plot. And the hanging, drawing and quartering that Guy fawkes and his merry men came to for the charge of High Treason and trying to blow up the then King in 1605.
But, I am sat here, quietly, and its like being in Beiruit or Lebanon from the noise!! Not the P.A. Lebanon, the Far East one, a warzone. As fireworks are going off by the second. Loud ones. And our fireworks here are in fact made with real gunpowder, and not the fire cracker types. They are pretty to watch sometimes. And its not the aggravation it used to be when I had a dog who was terrified of them. But tis nine thirty pm. They will likely go on till one or two am. And then for weeks after, cos they are still on sale, and normally at half price after Nov 5th, kids (often legally under age to be buying them) buy them and let them off at any given moment. Maybe I'm getting old!! YIKES... Squish that thought! But tonite when most folks have there home display in the garden, or attend organized displays at local parks, its the Fire services, buisiest nite of the year for attending fires. And our hospitals are innundated with emergencies where folks who played with fire (literally) got burned. A govt of not too long ago, possibly Tony Blair and his merry men, I can't be sure, tried to get a law bought in that would "ban fireworks" except for the organized displays. To stop people getting hurt, and the fire increase of this nite. But that spoke to me of becoming even further down the road of becoming a nanny state! Who needs a govt to tell us what is safe or not? Are we so brain dead we can't work it out workselves, that if we let a rocket off, while still holding onto it, we may lose our hand? Its like when that mad guy Thomas Hamilton of about ten years ago, went into a school in Scotland, with a gun, and massacred 16 children, mostly under six, tho guns of any real kind were already illegal here, the govt then went onto ban sporting guns for shooting at targets where stringent laws were already enforced, which included air rifles, which basically could fill someone with pellets but no way on earth could it kill them. But the govt in the grief and outcry against this mad man, banned all sporting guns of any kind. And they would have been hard pushed to kill many animals let alone a man or woman. So, now the only people to have firearms of any kind, are special branches of the police and the criminals, who get them illegally anyway. Its become common place over the last five years, to hear of drive by shootings in this country, wheras before that it was not heard of hardly at all. And these guns are all illegally owned, and often there targets are innocent by-standers. A young black girl of 13 years old who was from a Christian family wtih storng morals and principles, who wouldn't hurt a flea, became one of these statistics last New Years Eve.
